Three artists from the Workhouse Associate Artists (WAA) won People's Choice Awards for their current exhibition in the Vulcan gallery (Building W-16) at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton. They are Leesa Woodard, for her piece "Skylight Echo," Karen Rexrode for her piece "Fern Glade" and Mike Flynn for "Pot of Monterey Color," in first, second and third places, respectively. The three won during the Workhouse's monthly 2nd Saturday Art Walk on Aug. 10.
Woodard, an original member of the Workhouse, creates in acrylic, oil, photography and mixed media. “Skylight Echo” is based on a photograph by her goddaughter, shot this spring at dusk in Culpepper. Woodard is a local resident of Fairfax City and a George Mason University grad receiving an MFA with a major in painting.
Rexrode creates photography-based mixed media. She teaches at The Center for the Arts in Manassas and works in a studio, which she shares with fellow teachers. She is self-employed, a horticulturists by trade, living in Loudoun County with her husband, a yellow lab, guineas and chickens.
Flynn, a self-taught painter, has been a juried member of the Workhouse Artists Associates since 2008. His inspiration for “Pot of Monterey Color” came from photographs taken while traveling in California this past spring, during which he noticed large flower containers on the balconies of a local hotel in Monterey.
See the artists' winning pieces through the end of August; the gallery is located at 9601 Ox Road, Lorton. Details are at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Workhouse-Associate-Artists/134373016632491.
