Firefighter Injured in Townhouse Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a townhouse fire, Thursday, Jan. 17, at approximately 1:10 p.m. in the Fairview area of Fairfax County. The single family home is located at 5455 Cheshire Meadows Way.

Firefighters encountered smoke and fire coming from the basement of a two-story middle unit townhouse upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack and brought the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes and were able to confine the fire to the single townhouse. No one was home when the fire broke out. Three adults and one child have been displaced. Red Cross support was offered but declined by the occupants. One firefighter received a non-life threatening injury and was transported to the Washington Hospital Burn Center.

Damage is estimated at $180,000. According to fire investigators, the fire is under investigation.

Fairfax Center House Fire Under Investigation

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire, Thursday, Jan. 24, at approximately 11:45 p.m. in the Fairfax Center area of Fairfax County. The single family home is located at 4809 Village Drive.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire showing from the garage of the ranch style home upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack and brought the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes. Fire did spread to the kitchen and rear of the home. Two adults and two youths were home when the fire broke out and smelled smoke and quickly escaped the burning home. One of the adults was transported for non-life threatening injuries to INOVA Fairfax Hospital. All of the occupants have been displaced. Red Cross support was offered but declined by the occupants.

Damage is estimated at $105,000. The fire is under investigation.

Citizens Fire and Rescue Academy

Area residents wanting to learn more about the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department may now have the chance. They may participate in a nine-week program showing them what firefighters and paramedics do every day.

Applications to the first-ever Citizens Fire and Rescue Academy will be accepted until Monday, Feb. 18, or until the class of 25 is filled. The free program is open to those at least 18 years old. The academy will begin March 28, meeting for nine consecutive weeks, from 6-9 p.m., at various locations.

Each session will cover different aspects of the organization, providing an in-depth overview of it and its uniformed and civilian workforce. Program topics include fire suppression, emergency medical services, training, recruitment and special operations. Apply at www.fairfaxcounty.gov./fr/cfa.

Bob’s Discount Furniture Supports Area Schools

To celebrate the grand opening of the company’s new Fairfax store, located at the Greenbrier Shopping Center at 13055A Lee Jackson Memorial Highway, Bob’s Discount Furniture is donating $13,500 to eight Fairfax schools via its Outreach Program. On Thursday, Feb. 14, at 9:45 a.m. Cathy Poulin, public relations director of Bob’s Discount Furniture, will celebrate the opening of this store, alongside Supervisor Pat Harrity (R-Springfield) with a ribbon cutting ceremony and donation presentation to school representatives.
