The Rotary Club of Fairfax recently selected Rick Schroeder to receive the club’s highest honor: the Rotarian of the Year award. This award is given to a member who has demonstrated exemplary commitment to the principles of Rotary, and recognizes a Rotarian’s sustained, outstanding efforts in the Five Avenues of Service.
This year’s recipient epitomizes the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self”. He has led the club’s Community Service section, working tirelessly to support both existing and new service projects throughout the year. Of these, the Guatemala Literacy Project has been a stellar example of Mr. Schroeder’s dedication to service.
Several times he has traveled to Guatemala with a group of Rotary volunteers from across North America to bring educational opportunities to impoverished children. He has been responsible for bringing textbooks, computers, and other equipment and supplies to help educate the children of Guatemala thereby boosting literacy and enhancing local education efforts. His work in that country and in our local community have earned him the well deserved distinction of Rotarian of the Year.
