McLean High Yearbook Wins Pacemaker Award

Other area high school publications recognized.

“The Clan,” the yearbook of McLean High School, was one of 25 high school yearbooks nationwide to be recognized with a Pacemaker Award by the Journalism Education Association-National Scholastic Press Association (JEA-NSPA) for 2013. The award was presented at the organization’s annual convention in San Francisco last weekend.

Meghan Percival is the faculty adviser for “The Clan.” Oakton High School’s yearbook, “The Paragon,” was a finalist in the Yearbook Pacemaker competition; Lauren Luna serves as the adviser. The Annandale High School newspaper, “The A-Blast,” was a finalist in the Online News Pacemaker competition; Alan Weintraut serves as the advisor.

Ten student publications were recognized in the Best of Show competition. They include:

  • Literary Magazine: first place, Threshold, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST), Emily Orser, advisor.
  • Yearbook 325 or More Pages: second place, Odyssey, Chantilly High School, Mary Kay Downes, advisor; ninth place, The Guardian, Westfield High School, Anthony Whitten, advisor.
  • Yearbook 275-324 Pages: third place, The Clan, McLean High School, Meghan Percival, advisor; fourth place, Techniques, TJHSST, Erinn Harris, advisor.
  • Newspaper Special Edition: tenth place, The South Lakes Sentinel, South Lakes High School, Phil Dignan, advisor.
  • Newspaper Broadsheet 13-16 Pages: third place, The South Lakes Sentinel, South Lakes High School, Phil Dignan, advisor; sixth place, tjToday, TJHSST, Jennifer Seavey, advisor.
  • Newspaper Broadsheet 17+ Pages: seventh place, The A-Blast, Annandale High School, Alan Weintraut, advisor.
